Medical Insurance
Most medical insurance plans like Aetna-Chickering Group have clauses which cover you for treatment abroad. Check your plan! In the event of a doctor's visit, it is usually acceptable for the doctor to write the following on headed paper:

1. The exact nature of the sickness or injury
2. When the symptoms first appeared.
3. The nature of any treatment surgical or otherwise.
4. A a breakdown of the costs, consultation fee cost for any tests, etc.

Please note that BU students are covered as though you were still on a BU Campus. You can claim up to 80% of your expenses, though there is a deductible payment. Copies of the Insurance plan booklet and claim form are available in the International Programmes Office. Students from other schools often may have similar coverage options. The policy is provided through:

We offer this excerpt form our London Student handbook to help you to determine your health needs. Those students who need allergy shots, continuing treatment or medication while they are here in London will be able to contact Doctors and Medical practitioners directily from the United States to have their questions answered.

As an American citizen you are not eligible for the free medical treatment under the National Health Service (NHS). Even if you see a NHS General Practitioner or (GP) they will see and charge you as a private patient. (There is a list of local Private doctors who regularly treat our students below.) For very serious cases, broken limbs, serious cuts or burns, etc. you can check yourself into the Accident and Emergency department of a London hospital. Purchasing international medical coverage is critical!

For minor aches and pains, coughs, colds, stomach upsets, etc. Chemist shops (pharmacists) such as Boots sell "over the counter" remedies. Be aware that some over-the-counter drugs readily available at home may require a prescription in Britain, and vice versa.

A chemist will dispense medicines only on receipt of prescription from a Doctor (NHS £5.25). Non-NHS prescriptions are those prescribed by a private doctor, are charged at a higher price.

You should have submitted a summary of your medical history via your online form. This will be taken into consideration when making housing assignments, though a request for a single on medical grounds does not guarantee that you will be allocated a single. In the interests of fairness, a student will be required to fax medical records to the London Office (0207 373 6462) but the Housing staff reserve the right to consult with an independent Medical Authority for verification.

Once you arrive you should remember, however, that no one else here will know your case history, so if you have a condition which might cause concern to your friends or flatmates (e.g. fainting spells, allergies) please take the precaution of advising those around you.

Doctors
The list of local doctors below, taken from London American Embassy sources, is for your convenience only. Boston University cannot assume responsibility for the professional ability or integrity of the persons whose names appear below. However, on a verifiable report that a doctor has failed to uphold professional medical standards, they will be removed from the list.

Expect to pay approximately £75.00 for a consultation. Tests cost extra. You must telephone the doctor’s surgery for an appointment. Some, like the doctors at the Promis Unit (our local doctor) may be able to slot you in within a couple of hours.
